The Weeknd gives $1 million to fund relief work in Ethiopia

The Weeknd has announced a $1 million donation to assist humanitarian efforts in Ethiopia.

The Canadian singer even encouraged his fans to join him in his show of support.

The R&B star has on Twitter expressed his displeasure over happenings in the East African country.

On Sunday, he wrote on Instagram: “My heart breaks for my people of Ethiopia as innocent civilians ranging from small children to the elderly are being senselessly murdered and entire villages are being displaced out of fear and destruction.”

The Weeknd was born in Canada but is the son of two Ethiopian immigrants. His real name is Abel Tesfaye.

According to Africanews, this is not the singer’s first charitable act. He donated $1 million to support people affected by the pandemic in June of last year. He has once also donated $500,000 to non-profits dedicated to racial equality.
